Position Title: Percussion Instructor
BENNINGTON HIGH SCHOOL PERCUSSION INSTRUCTOR
LOCATION: High School
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part Time
APPLICATION MATERIALS REQUIRED:
- Candidates shall have one of the following:
- A valid Nebraska Teaching and/or Administrative & Supervisory certificate.
- A valid Provisional Trades Certificate and/or valid Special Services certificate.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: As an assistant to the high school Band Director, the Percussion Instructor is responsible for the planning and instruction of the school’s percussion students. Responsibilities will encompass both battery and pit percussion. The instructor prepares and rehearses the ensemble for independent performances and competitions in accordance with school curriculum.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
The Percussion Instructor will:
- Engage students to practice, play and perform introduced materials.
- Attend all rehearsals, sectionals, and performances, actively participating in assisting students in sectionals and whole group rehearsals.
- Teach drum line basics, i.e. warm-ups, marching techniques and stick work.
- Provide a rounded percussion playing experience and education
- Work with the director during rehearsals and provide input into placement of students on particular instruments of the percussion section.
- Teach and assist the “pit” section players with mallet technique and the memorization of music.
- Assist in teaching drill for the show. Choreograph sticking and drum line movement to match the drill.
- Monitor and control student behavior according to established procedures.
- Maintain inventories of percussion supplies, materials and equipment.
- Adjust and maintain percussion instruments ensuring timely availability for student use.
- Be able to work outdoors and indoors; exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather.
- Other duties as assigned by the Band Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma; Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.
- Strong background in marching band, percussion performance. University marching band, drum corps, or percussion performance group preferred
- Experience in the various sub groups of the percussion section (i.e. snare, bass, tenors, mallets, cymbals, etc.)
- Previous experience teaching/instructing percussion.
- Experience working with high school aged students.
- Ability to tune/replace drum heads and do general maintenance work on percussion equipment
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, administrators, and community members
- Maintain high level of ethical behavior and exercise good judgment in making decisions.
COMPENSATION: Level V on the Extra-Curricular Activities Salary Schedule (~$1500)
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: High School Band Director and Assistant Principal/Athletic Director
