TITLE OF POSITION: High School Dean of Students
DIVISION OF: Instruction
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal
CONTRACT PERIOD: Teaching Contract (186 days) Plus 20 Extra days (206-Day Contract)
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in Education and enrollment in an educational administration program or possession of an administrative certificate.
CERTIFICATION: Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate
EXPERIENCE SUGGESTED: Three or more years of successful teaching experience
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Dean(s) are responsible for attendance, discipline and related pupil personnel services. The Dean(s) recognize the Principal as the Chief Administrative Officer of the School and perform the duties within the authority and responsibility delegated by the Principal, which may include support and leadership related to attendance, truancy, discipline, academic performance, interventions for behavior & academics, classified staff evaluation, extracurricular supervision, other general administrative tasks, duties as assigned. The positions will be reviewed annually.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Attendance
- Recommends building policies and procedures related to attendance as well as supervising the attendance process by working cooperatively with the teachers, counselors, secretaries, students, parents, and law enforcement to encourage students to be in attendance and on time to school.
- Enforces state and district policies and procedures related to attendance and school enrollment.
2. Discipline
- Recommends and implements building policies and procedures related to discipline in accordance with Rule 51 and IDEA.
- Receives referrals for BHS staff members. Processes behavior referrals with an approach to shape student behavior with consequences & incentives consistent with the student-parent handbook and board of education policy. Works with the student, and/or the student’s parents/guardians, teachers or core instructional team to improve the social skills of the student.
- Assigns discipline for student violations of the code of conduct up through short term suspension.
- Recommends to the appropriate administrator long term suspension and/or expulsion from school.
3. Personnel
- Supervises and evaluates classified staff as assigned by the Principal. Develops, implements and evaluates orientation plans for classified and certified staff.
- Performs duties and responsibilities assigned by the Principal through the year including input on the classroom management of teachers.
4. Student-Support Team & Interventions
- Plans, develops, and implements the building-wide procedures for student support related to academics and behavior regulation.
- Develops long term goals and appropriate data to identify strengths and areas of focus for student behavior and achievement.
5. Athletics/Activities
- Assists with the supervision of athletic contests and extracurricular events throughout the school year.
- Works collaboratively with administration and performs duties agreed upon and delegated to in the event of staff or supervision personnel absences.
6. General Administration
- Attend staff meetings, principals’ meetings, and assigned committee meetings at the building and district level.
- Prepares and presents, at the direction of the Principal, reports requested by the principal, the Superintendent of Schools and/or the Superintendent’s staff.
- Fulfills other duties assigned by the Superintendent, Principal and/or a delegate.
